Kyle Hammer
12th-place finish in Late Model at FALS, fourth in Modified at Red Hill
Kyle Hammer made his first start of the season aboard the Brent McKinnon-owned No. 26H Late Model on Friday afternoon at Brownstown Bulllring (Brownstown, Ill.) for opening round of the recently revived MARS Late Model Championship.
With 37 Late Models in the pit area for the Diggin’ Dirt 40, Hammer’s sixth-place finish in his heat race relegated him into a B-Main for another shot at the opener. Needing to place second or better, Kyle fell two spots short with a fourth-place outing.
For another $5,000-to-win MARS event on Saturday at Fairbury Speedway (Fairbury, Ill.), Kyle edged his way into the main event with the fourth-and-final transfer spot in his heat race. Rolling off on the seventh row, Hammer clawed forward two spots in the talent-laden field to finish 12th.
Pulling double duty on Sunday afternoon at Red Hill Raceway (Sumner, Ill.), Hammer timed in third-fastest in his Late Model group before picking up a heat race victory over Jason Feger. With $5,000 on the line in the feature, Kyle suffered a broken right-front shock mount in the final circuits that ended his top-five run.
Aboard the Brian Shaw-owned No. 145 Modified, Hammer followed up a second-place finish in his heat with a fourth-place showing in the feature. He chased Tyler Nicely, Trent Young, and Justin Jones to the checkers with Zac Harris coming in fifth.
